Mud Fever Masterclass – Prevention

Mud Fever Masterclass – Prevention

By Dr Jim Rawlinson BVMS MBA MRCVS

Whenever I mention mud fever I stress the importance of prevention. It’s a painful condition that once established takes a lot of time and care to resolve. Although often considered an infection, the underlying problem is bacteria taking advantage damage and inflammation caused by damp conditions. That’s why going into winter with an effective “skin care regime” is essential.

Turnout is essential for horses and mine go out in (almost) all weather conditions. But I do bring them in at night. This gives me the opportunity to sort legs and feet out every day. I choose to thoroughly wash off the lower legs, heels & hooves but I do ensure they are thoroughly dried off afterwards and then go into their stables with dry beds.

For horses out that are out all the time, mud fever prevention can be trickier. If possible, moving onto a hard standing each day to allow mud to dry and then brushed off can help. This also allows a thorough examination of the skin around problem areas such as the heels and lower canons. Check for any redness or scabs that could indicate the start of an infection.

Pasture management can play its part, but this is not always easy or straightforward. However rotation where possible to avoid poaching and fencing of very wet areas can all help. Gateways and the ground around water troughs can become mud hotspots where  laying hardcore or special matting can improve the standing.

I don’t personally use turnout boots, but they can have their place. It’s essential that they fit well and are regularly checked to ensure they don’t rub or trap moisture and mud close to the skin.

Barrier creams can also help with mud management, and most effective when used as soon as conditions start to change and before there are any signs of mud fever or infections.

Nettex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream is a highly effective waterproof barrier providing antibacterial protection against wet and muddy conditions. It also moisturises and maintains skin elasticity to prevent drying and cracking.
